TFI Biomedical is part of The Forensic Institute (hence the ‘TFI’). How did we get from forensic to medical?
The Forensic Institute was established in 2002 to provide consultancy and research in forensic science, especially DNA profiling using PCR, and continues to do so.
Given the use of PCR in virus testing, during COVID, TFI were invited to create a COVID testing laboratory. The lab was set up in Cumbernauld and performed PCR testing for thousands of samples using a highly automated process. Pharmacists and GPs were clients of the lab. It was they who identified a need for a local ‘blood lab’.
Having already been in discussion with Glasgow Caledonian University on forensic matters, the conversation turned to biomedical science (the University offers two degrees in Biomedical Science to which TFI Biomedical will contribute). And so TFI Biomedical was created within the Charles Oakley Laboratories of Glasgow Caledonian University. An experienced team with international experience now delivers the services of TFI Biomedical.
This provides a perfect City Centre environment for the successful development of the laboratory to provide new tests. Links with the university provide opportunities for research, education and access to massive scientific resources for specific projects or scientific problems required by industry.
TFI Biomedical’s goal continues to be to supply reliable medical laboratory testing at the lowest price. To do this, we have strict control of overheads and focus on the provision of analytical results.
Every test is validated and we take part in external Quality Assurance schemes to ensure the reliability of our systems.
TFI Biomedical is based on a sound scientific foundation with a perfect environment to exploit new laboratory business opportunities.
Already there are active discussions on the development of a full food analysis service.
